Te Reo, Term 4
This term we have been learning all about the Marae. We have learned that…….
- The Marae is an important focal point for the community.
- The Marae is a place where tradition and customs can be carried out.
- The Marae is a place where people can express their values with dignity.
- There are many kawa ( protocols) that prevail on the marae.
- Marae kawa (protocols) can differ between maraes and iwi.
We have focused on some key concepts when doing this learning.
These are listed and explained in the table below.
Concept

Parliament
This term we have been learning about Parliament. We have looked at the difference between government and parliament, NZ parliament, who is in government, how our government works and we compared democracy to dictatorship.
Three things that I learned are NZ parliament are:
- Parliament has 120 seats and 1 for the speaker.
- John Key (Prime Minister) sits in the 4 seat on the right.
- The Governor General opens and closes Parliament every 4 years.
Here is the link to my compare and contrast map explaining the difference between democracy and dictatorship.

I can take action to improve the water cycle in Canterbury
In this project I was working with Ryan and we decided to create a water filter
Here is a link what we made.
In this project we decided that our success criteria were: (list the criteria you created on slide 7)
Overall our project did not meet this criteria because it didn't filter the water properly.
A water filter needs...
|
Why is this important?
|
To actually turn dirty water into clean, drinkable water.
|
So it works and people don’t get sick when they drink it.
|
The right materials
|
Might not work or make the water clean
|
To be portable
|
So it can filter water whenever/wherever we want
|
Strong, Sturdy and Long Lasting
|
So that we can use it for a long time before we need to make another one.
|
It needs to be balanced
|
So we can put it on anything and it will stay and collect water.

WALT apply the techniques of improvisation to a range of different scenarios.
Improvisation TECHNIQUES that I have used successfully are never say 'no' and keep the scene going.
Improvisation TECHNIQUES that I would like to have more practice at is never say 'no'.
The thing that I enjoyed most about this unit of learning was making things up because improvisation is about making things up.
The thing that I found most challenging during this unit of learning was keeping the scene going because it is hard to try not to kill the scene.
My favourite improvisation game was 'What are you doing?' because we had to act out a random activity on the spot.
My next step/ something I need to work on further in improvisation is to get involved more because I wasn't involved that much.

CARE: My progress so far.
The CARE award that I am working towards is Gold.
The one area of CARE that I am doing best in is Community because I contribute to class and group discussions.
The one area of CARE that I need to work harder in is Respect because I keep losing my pens and stuff like that.
To show my leadership qualities I am a role model to others in the CARE values by doing/showing these leadership traits: Integrity, Trustworthy and Active Thinker
On the CARE SOLO matrix below I am at this SOLO level Extended Abstract because I can use the CARE values independently and I role model these to others.

I can apply my knowledge of adverbial clauses and connectives to see how ideas are linked in texts.
For reading I have been learning about adverbial clauses. I have found this learning quite easy because it was easy to understand what an adverbial clause is.
In this activity (link to adverbial clause activity), I had to add the adverbial clause to the sentence so the sentence makes sense.

Information Report
This is my information report on the water cycle.
The water cycle is the cycle that water goes through. It is also known as the hydrologic cycle. The water is recycled and there is no new water created and no water is lost in the process. The water changes state as a liquid, solid and gas. There are four steps in the water cycle and the four steps are: evaporation, condensation, precipitation and runoff.
Evaporation
Evaporation is an invisible process where the water from oceans, lakes and rivers rises into the atmosphere as a gas. On hotter days the process of evaporation is greater, because the sun’s energy breaks the bonds that hold the liquid water molecules together. Water vapor in the air is known as humidity, in some hot places there is more humidity. After the water turns into a gas, the water rises into the atmosphere and forms clouds. This step is called condensation.
Condensation
Condensation is when the water vapor collides with the dust in the air and then the clouds are formed. In the atmosphere, cooler temperatures cause the water vapor to condense (water vapor turning back to a liquid). Colder air can contain less water vapor than warmer air, so the warm air rises to where the temperatures a much cooler, that is how condensation happens. Then the clouds get too heavy and the water in the clouds comes down as rain, hail, snow etc.
Precipitation
Precipitation is the stage where the clouds get too heavy and the water inside the cloud comes down as rain, hail, snow etc. In some places there is less precipitation and in others there may be more precipitation. As the water comes down it goes through a process called infiltration when the water infiltrates into the ground. After the water infiltrates into the ground it goes to the plants. The water that doesn’t go into the ground goes to the ocean, lakes and rivers. The water that lands in the rivers goes back the oceans and lakes, this step is called runoff.
Runoff
This is the process when the water from precipitation goes back to the ocean, lakes and rivers. The water flows through rivers back to the ocean. It’s like water running down on your driveway. It also goes under the ground and back to the ocean, this is called the groundwater flow and it comes out of vents that are in the oceans.
After the water goes back to oceans, lakes and rivers the process is repeated and repeated and repeated. There is no new water is created, it is the same water used by your great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great grandparents.

WALT: relate tables, graphs, and equations to linear and simple quadratic relationships found in number and spatial patterns.
Assessment Task: A car rental business has two rental schemes, red and blue for rentals up to ten days. These schemes are advertised in their brochures with this graph.
Use the following information to work out how many days of rental would carry the same total cost on either the blue or the red scheme (show your working).
The area under the graph gives the total cost of renting.
The schemes each follow a linear pattern, cutting the vertical axis at 120 and 170.
Both blue and red schemes cost $110 on the 4th day of rental.
The cost was the same on the forth day.

I can recognise and understand a variety of grammatical constructions and some rhetorical patterns
In this unit I have been learning about:
The parts of speech.
The types of nouns.
The types of sentences.
In this unit, I found challenging finding whether a sentence was a statement, question, exclamation or a command.
Something new I learnt was that a sentence can be a statement, question, exclamation or a command.

My CARE Progress
I have done a check of my CARE progress so far this year.
I am proud of my progress/ I am doing ok/ I feel I could do much better.
(Highlight the one that applies to you and delete the ones that don’t)
Give reasons for the answer that you have highlighted above.
I have received my Bronze award.
How far away are you from reaching your BRONZE/SILVER?
I still have a lot to go until my Silver award.
The area of CARE that I need to try harder in C / A / R / E because I don't have many ticks in Community.
To achieve my BRONZE/SILVER award quicker I need to record my ticks when I get them, and not to record heaps at the same time.
The one thing that I can do to improve my progress in CARE is to have a focus every week.
We will review CARE progress again at the end of the term.

Student Led Conference Reflection
The things I enjoyed most about my SLC were:
Sharing my learning with my parents.
What went well and why?
Sharing using the slide, because there was internet.
What were the challenges you faced when preparing and presenting your SLC?
My parents asking too many questions.
What changes would you make for next time and why?
Speak slower and clearer.
